Taha Leather Garments Chennai is located at No. 85 Asthabujam Road in Choolai. If you walk down the street, you can usually smell the leather before you see the door. Choolai is a very old part of town and the buildings are packed close together. Our workspace is filled with the sound of sewing machines clicking away all day long. We have rolls of leather leaning against the walls and scraps on the floor that we sweep up every evening. It’s a bit of a dusty job, and your hands get stained from the dyes sometimes. The guys working the machines have been doing this since they were young, so they are very fast at what they do. We don't have a showroom with fancy lights. It’s just a workshop where the actual making happens. Sometimes it gets a bit loud when everyone is talking over the machines, but that's just how it is. We drink a lot of coffee to stay awake during the long shifts. The windows are usually open to let some air in, but you mostly just hear the traffic from the road. It’s honest work and we take our time to make sure the stitches are straight because no one likes a jacket that falls apart. It’s a small team here and we just keep the work moving. There is always a pile of hides waiting to be sorted and prepared for the next batch.
