Hindustan Zinc Ltd.

The office here is at the Chanderiya Smelting Complex, right by Putholi in the Chittorgarh district. I’m the Public Relations Officer, but that mostly means I talk to people and try to fix things when they go wrong. This place is massive. You can’t miss it when you’re driving near Putholi. Hindustan Zinc Ltd. runs a huge operation here, and our building is right in the thick of it. It’s always loud with the sound of machinery and trucks coming and going. My desk is usually covered in letters and local news clippings. It’s not a quiet desk job; people are always walking in with some issue or a question about the complex. We have a lot of tea here, mostly because it’s the only way to stay sharp with all the activity. The air smells like industry, which I guess is just the smell of work to us. We don't do things in a very corporate way here. It’s more about knowing the locals and making sure the communication stays open. Some days I spend more time outside walking around the site than I do at my computer. It’s a busy life, and the heat in Chittorgarh can really wear you down by three in the afternoon. But we’ve got a good group of people who have been here for years, so we just keep things moving despite the noise and the constant ringing of the telephones.
