Our place is at Door No 26-267/6 in Iruvaram. Sahitya Coir Fibre & Ropes Industries is what we call ourselves. It’s a bit of a long name for a small place, but it covers what we do. Working with coir and rope is messy work. You end up with rough hands and those little brown fibres on your clothes by the end of the day. Our shop in Iruvaram isn't in a big industrial park or anything like that. It’s just a regular building where we’ve set up our machines and storage. The space is a bit cramped because we have so much material stacked up, but we know where everything is. Usually, you’ll hear the hum of the equipment before you even walk through the door. It’s a steady sound that we’ve gotten used to over the years. We don't have a receptionist or a waiting room with magazines. If someone comes by, they usually just shout for one of us over the noise. We keep things pretty simple here. There’s a small desk in the corner where we keep the ledger and the phone, but most of the time we’re out on the floor. It’s not the kind of job where you stay clean, but it’s what we do. We’ve been at this address for a long time, and the neighbors know us by now. It’s just us, making ropes and fibres in Iruvaram day after day.
