Out here in Shreekshetra Dervan, things move at a different speed than in the big cities. Bkl Walawalkar Hospital sits in the Ratnagiri district, surrounded by more greenery than concrete. It’s a large place for such a quiet area. We get a lot of people coming in from the surrounding villages, some traveling quite a distance to reach us. The walk from the main road can be a bit long when the sun is out, but we see people making the trip every day. Inside, the floors are usually being mopped and the staff is busy sorting through paperwork or tending to the wards. We handle all sorts of medical needs, from small scrapes to much bigger issues. The air in Ratnagiri is salty sometimes, and during the monsoon, the rain hits the roof so loud you can barely hear yourself think. We don't have the fancy glass buildings you see in Mumbai, but we have enough space and the right tools for what needs doing. Most of us have been working here for years, so we know which doors creak and where to find the best shade during lunch. It’s just a regular hospital trying to serve the folks who live in this part of the country. We keep the lights on and the doors open, day and night, regardless of the weather outside.
