M A T Bricks

We've been here on B H Road at 5-14-86 for a while now. It’s mostly just us getting the bricks ready every morning. The work is loud and the yard gets pretty dusty when the trucks come through to pick up orders. Most days, we’re just making sure the stacks are straight and that the machines are actually running right. It isn’t some fancy office setup. We’ve got a small shed where we keep the books and drink tea. Sometimes the rain slows us down and we have to cover everything up fast. That’s just how it goes with this kind of work. People stop by because they see the sign from the road. We don’t have a big staff, just a few of us who know how to handle the clay and the heat. It’s a lot of physical labor. You get used to the red dust on your clothes after a week. We don't spend much time on the computer or doing paperwork unless we have to. Most of the time is spent out in the yard checking the batches. It’s a basic business. We make the bricks, people buy them, and we try to keep the place organized enough so we can find what we need. It’s just how we earn a living here on B H Road. Nothing more than that. We just show up, do the work, and go home when the sun sets. The road is always busy.
