Shri Makhanlal Chaturvedi Government College is out on Pipariya Road in Babai. It’s a bit of a trek for some, but it’s the main spot for higher education in this part of Hoshangabad district. Being a government college, things move at a certain speed here. It’s not a shiny new campus, but it has plenty of space and some big trees that provide shade when the Madhya Pradesh sun gets too hot in the summer. Students come in from all the surrounding villages, often arriving on buses that are packed to the brim. The hallways are wide and usually full of chatter between classes. We have our offices and the lecture halls, and everything is pretty basic. You won't find any luxury here, just desks, chairs, and blackboards. The staff handles a lot of paperwork because that’s just how it goes with government institutions. Sometimes the fans are a bit squeaky, and the walls could use some work, but it’s where the local youth get their degrees. It’s an honest place. We see a lot of hard-working kids who are the first in their families to go to college. The location on the highway makes it easy to find, even if the dust from the road gets everywhere. We just try to provide a decent environment for everyone who walks through the gates each morning to study.
