L. P. Kadel Ltd. is tucked away on Kalathi Pillai Street in Sowcarpet. If you know this part of town, you know it is right near Elephant Gate, so there is never a quiet moment. The street is so narrow that you can barely fit a rickshaw through when the shops are unloading their stock. Our place at No. 36 is an old building with a lot of character. The stairs are narrow and the ceiling is a bit low, but it has been our home for a long time. We handle a lot of different things here, and the rooms are packed floor to ceiling with stock. You have to know exactly where things are, or you’ll get lost in the stacks. We don’t have a fancy reception desk or anyone in a suit waiting to greet you. Usually, you’ll find us sitting on wooden stools or moving boxes around to make space for a new delivery. The air in Sowcarpet always smells like spices and diesel from the trucks. It’s a gritty place to work, but there is an energy here that you don’t find in the newer parts of the city. We don’t bother with polished speeches or big promises. We just do the work, count the items, and make sure the accounts stay straight. It’s a basic operation run by people who have been here since the beginning.
