Our office is tucked away in the Dr. V.S. Instronics Estate over in Thiruvanmiyur. Being at Ii/3 means we are right in the middle of a lot of other technical shops. Southern Magnetics has been operating from this spot for years, and the building has that typical older industrial estate feel to it. It’s not the kind of place with a lobby or a receptionist in a suit. Usually, you’ll just find a few of us sitting around desks piled with papers and some magnetic components we’re testing. The humidity in Chennai can be pretty rough, especially in an estate like this, so the fans are always going. We do a lot of technical work that requires a bit of patience. Thiruvanmiyur is a nice area, though the traffic near the estate can get a bit backed up in the evenings. Most of the people working here live nearby, so we’ve become a tight group over time. We don’t really do fancy presentations or anything like that. If someone comes by, we usually just show them what’s on the workbench. It’s a quiet sort of place most days, except when we have a big batch of orders going out. We just try to keep the magnetics side of things running smoothly without making it more complicated than it needs to be. It’s just us doing our daily work in a corner of the city, trying to stay busy.
