Our place is at 24C in Therespuram, which is over in Thoothukudi. If you are from around here, you know it is near the coast. The office is just a simple building on the street. We do chit funds, which is what most people in the neighborhood use to save up for things like weddings or buying a house. It is a very local thing. We don't have a big corporate office with glass walls. It is just a room with some tables and a fan. People from Therespuram walk over to see us. They might be coming back from the harbor or the market. We sit down and talk about the monthly payments. Sometimes they are a little late, and we have to give them a call. It is all very personal. We write down everything in the books and give them their receipts. Thoothukudi can get very humid, so the office usually feels a bit sticky, but we don't mind it much. We have been doing this for a while now. The members are like our neighbors because they actually are our neighbors. We don't try to be anything we are not. We just run the chit cycles and make sure the money is handled properly. It is a quiet life for the most part, except for the days when the auction happens. Then it feels like the whole street is in our office.
