Being in Ambattur means dealing with a lot of noise every day. Our place, Rg Bronze, is over at DP-70 in the SIDCO Industrial Estate. It’s a huge area with lots of shops doing all sorts of metal work and fabrication. We mainly focus on bronze here. It is definitely hot work, especially when the furnaces are running in the afternoon. The air smells like metal and old oil most of the time you are inside. We have our regulars who come by, and the whole neighborhood is full of people who actually know how things are made. There is a small tea shop just around the corner where everyone goes to take a break. We spend our mornings checking the molds and our afternoons dealing with the heat from the floor. It is a messy place, but that is just how it goes when you work with bronze. The floor is always covered in something or other. We don’t really worry about the decor or making the office look nice for visitors. It is functional for what we do. My desk is usually covered in papers and some small metal parts that need to be sorted. We have been at this address for a good bit now. Ambattur has grown so much since we started, but the SIDCO estate still feels like its own little world. You get used to the rhythm of the machines after a few months. Some days the delivery trucks block the whole road. We just do the work.
