Radiant Bearings Madras is based on Chambu Street. We’ve been at this location, which is New No. 299, for quite a while now. The building is an old one, previously known as No. 144. We specialize in bearings. If you need something that spins, we probably have the part for it sitting on a shelf somewhere. The shop is filled with rows and rows of small boxes. It smells like machine oil and old paper in here all the time. We spend a lot of time looking through catalogs to find the exact match for what a customer brings in. Sometimes they bring in a rusted old piece that’s decades old, and we have to dig through the back stock to find it. It’s a very specific kind of business. We don't have a lot of walk-in traffic from regular people; it’s mostly mechanics and factory workers. The street outside is narrow, so getting deliveries in can be a bit of a struggle for the drivers. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot over the years, but our shop stays pretty much the same as it was. We don’t use any fancy sales tactics or posters. We just tell you what we have and what it costs. My hands are almost always a bit dirty from handling the stock, but that’s fine. We don't have a polished showroom. It’s just a place of business where we know our inventory inside and out. It’s simple and steady work.
