Our business, P K Mohammed & Co., is tucked away at No Sp 47A in the Ambattur Industrial Estate. If you know this area, you know it’s all about warehouses and manufacturing plants. It’s a gritty place but it’s where the real work happens in this city. We have been operating out of this specific spot for years. The building is a bit old and the paint is peeling in some corners, but it holds everything we need. We mostly deal with industrial supplies and coordinating things for other businesses in the estate. There is always a truck idling outside or someone moving pallets around with a jack. It gets pretty hot inside during the summer months, so we keep the big doors open to catch whatever breeze we can. We don't have a fancy reception area or anyone to greet you in a suit. Usually, you just walk in and find one of us near the back office or on the floor. We drink a lot of tea and talk about the day's tasks. The noise from the neighboring factories is something you just get used to after a while. It isn't a glamorous life, but we like the routine of it. We just focus on getting the orders right and making sure things leave the gate on time. It’s a practical way to earn a living in a very busy industrial zone and we are fine with that.
