Orchid Towers is a pretty tall building on Valluvar Kottam High Road. If you know Nungambakkam, you know how the traffic gets during the morning rush hour. We’re based here, dealing with Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd. It’s not always quiet in the office. There is a lot of noise coming up from the street, especially the buses honking. Inside, it’s mostly computers humming and people talking on the phones. We have desks piled with files. Sometimes we lose a pen and find it three days later under a stack of invoices. We don't have a fancy lounge or a gym. We have a small break area where the kettle is always working overtime. Most of us take the bus or ride a scooter to get here. It’s a long commute for some, but that’s just how it is in the city. Working with chemicals and medicines means there is a lot of technical stuff to track. We aren't trying to change the world in a single day, just trying to keep the orders moving. It’s a steady rhythm. Some days are faster than others. By five or six, we’re all thinking about the ride home. The building has been here for a while, and so have many of the people working in it. It’s just a regular workplace with regular people trying to do their jobs right without making too much of a fuss. We usually share some biscuits in the afternoon while looking out at the traffic.
