Our shop is over in Adyar on Bridge Road. We are at Old No 2 New No 5, right across from Malar Hospital. It’s a spot many people pass by on their way across the bridge. We deal with furniture every day, so there’s usually the smell of sawdust or varnish in the air. It’s a physical job, moving heavy tables and chairs around the floor. We don't have a shiny showroom with bright lights. It’s more of a practical space where you can see the pieces for what they are. Some of the stuff has been sitting here a bit, while other things move out as soon as they arrive. We spend a lot of time talking to folks about what kind of wood they prefer or how big a dining table should be. It gets pretty hot in here during the afternoon, but we have a few fans going to keep the air moving. My family has been doing this kind of work for a long time. We aren’t interested in those big mall stores. We like being part of the street here. You can see the hospital visitors coming and going all day long. Sometimes we sit out front when it’s quiet. We just try to make decent stuff that stays together and does the job it’s supposed to do for a long time. It’s hard work on the back, but it feels good to finish a project and see it go to a new home.
