Our place is located on Elephant Tank 2nd Street in Royapettah. If you’ve ever been to this part of Chennai, you know it’s crowded and has a lot of history. The office is at number 27. It’s an old building, nothing like those glass towers you see in the IT parks. Inside, it’s mostly just desks pushed together and stacks of paper everywhere. We do a lot of the back-office work for the housing projects here. You can hear the sounds of the street all day, from the auto-rickshaws to the kids playing after school. Royapettah is a busy hub, so there is always something going on outside. We usually have a lot of people coming in and out, like site supervisors and vendors checking on payments. The air conditioning works most of the days, which is a relief in this weather. We don’t have a big fancy lobby. You just walk in and see us working. There is a small kitchen area where we keep the kettle for tea. It’s a bit cramped when everyone is in at the same time, but we make it work. Most of the staff has a favorite lunch spot nearby where they get meals. It’s just a regular workplace where we try to keep track of all the construction details. It’s busy, a bit messy, and very real. We have been here for a long time and know the area well.
