We are down here in the basement of Cisons Complex, right at number 16 on Monteith Road. If you know Egmore, you know how the traffic gets around here, especially during the afternoon rush. It is not the biggest space we have ever had, but it fits what we need for the lab work. Most days start early with someone unlocking the main shutter and checking the equipment. There is a specific smell to the place, a mix of cleaning supplies and whatever we are testing that day. It is quiet once you get inside, away from the street noise. We spend a lot of time looking at slides or handling samples. The desks are a bit cluttered with old logs and pens that barely work, but that is just how it goes when you are busy. Sometimes the light in the hallway flickers, and we keep meaning to get the building guy to fix it. We have a small kettle for tea because the walk to the nearest stall takes too long when the rain starts. It isn't a fancy corporate office with glass walls or anything like that. Just a practical spot where we get the bio lab stuff done. People come in with their requirements, we write them down in the ledger, and we get to it. It has been this way for a while now, and we have gotten used to the quirks of this old building and the way the basement stays cool even in summer.
