Operating a lorry service in Sowcarpet is a specific kind of challenge. We are located at 86 Anna Pillai Street, which is on Walltax Road. We’re right opposite the Corporation Lorry Shed, so there is always a lot of heavy vehicle movement around us. Chennai Covai Lorry Service has been here for years. The office is basically a hub for drivers and loaders. It’s dusty and noisy, and there’s always someone coming or going. We don’t have air conditioning or fancy furniture; it’s just wooden desks and big ledgers. We handle the movement of goods between Chennai and Coimbatore mostly, hence the name. Walltax Road is always jammed, so we spend a lot of time timing our departures. It’s not a glamorous job. There’s a lot of shouting and physical work involved. We have tea together in the mornings and talk about the road conditions or the latest fuel prices. We don't bother with marketing or trying to sound like a big logistics company. We’re just a local business that knows how to move cargo from one point to another. People know us because we’ve been at this spot for a long time. It’s honest, hard work, and we just keep it moving one truck at a time. The heat gets pretty bad under the tin roof in the afternoons, but that is just part of the job. We stay until the last truck for the day has left the yard.
