The Braille Book Shoppe is a bit of a quiet corner compared to the rest of the busy city. We have shelves that go all the way to the ceiling, filled with books that have those characteristic thick pages. The smell of paper is everywhere here. It’s a small shop, and sometimes the aisles feel a bit narrow when we get a new shipment in. Royapettah is a lively neighborhood, but once you step inside, the sounds of the traffic fade away a little bit. We don’t have much in the way of modern decor. The furniture is mostly old wood that’s been around since we opened. We spend our days sorting through titles and helping people find what they need. There is a small desk near the front where we keep the ledger and the phone. Sometimes we sit out front on a stool when the weather is nice. It’s a simple life running a bookshop. We don’t have any fancy marketing or big ads. People just know we are here on Begum Street. It’s a very specific kind of work, and we just focus on getting the books to the people who want them.
