Working at Shop No 30 inside Express Avenue can be a bit of a blur sometimes. We are right there on Mount Road, so even before the mall opens to the public, there is a lot of activity with security and cleaning crews. Once the shutters go up, we spend the first hour just making sure every shirt and jacket is sitting exactly right on the hangers. The lighting is very bright, and the air conditioning stays cold all day long. It is a completely different world inside the mall compared to the heat outside on Mount Road. We spend a lot of time talking to people who wander in while they are out shopping for the day. Sometimes it is very quiet, and we just reorganize the shelves or check the sizes in the back room. Other times, it gets really crowded, especially on the weekends when the whole of Chennai seems to be at Express Avenue. We don't really do big speeches or sales pitches. We just help people find a good fit and maybe suggest a tie that doesn't clash with the suit. The floor is very polished, and we have to keep it clean because shoes leave marks constantly. It’s a decent place to work, even if the background music loop gets a bit repetitive after eight hours. We just try to keep things tidy and make sure everyone feels okay while they are browsing our racks.
