Ambattur is a hot place, especially inside the industrial estate. Our spot at D 18 is a large space because paints take up a lot of room. There’s a constant smell of chemicals and pigments in the air, but we’re used to it. It’s not like a retail shop where everything is pretty. This is where the heavy lifting happens. We have a lot of workers moving pallets around and trucks backing into the loading bay. The office part is partitioned off to keep the noise down. It’s a bit cramped inside the office area, with desks pushed together. We have old fans that creak a bit. Berger Paints India Limited is a big name, but here at D 18, it feels like a local shop. We know the drivers and the regular contractors who come by. We spend a lot of time on the phone coordinating deliveries. Sometimes the computer system is slow, and we have to wait around, which gives us time to catch up on the local news. We don't have a fancy coffee machine, just a kettle and some milk powder. It gets the job done. The floor is stained with different colors from years of work. It’s a place where work actually happens, not just talk. We stay until the last truck is cleared for the day, then we lock up and head out. It’s tiring, but it's what we do. The guard always waves.
