Being on General Patters Road in Chennai means you’re right in the middle of everything related to cars. We are at Old No 22, which is now New No 39/5. People still get confused by the numbers, but if you say GP Road near Mount Road, they usually find their way. Auto Sales Company is an old-school kind of place. We don’t have those bright LED lights or a fancy glass front. It’s mostly open to the street, so we get all the heat and the dust. The ceiling fans work overtime during the summer months. We deal with a lot of different people, from truck drivers to folks with small cars. Everyone is looking for something specific. The shelves go all the way up to the ceiling, and we use a rickety ladder to get to the top ones. It’s a bit of a workout every day. The street outside is always blocked with vehicles and people carrying heavy boxes. It’s loud and messy, but there’s an energy to it that you don’t find elsewhere. We’ve been here long enough to see the buildings around us get taller while we stay pretty much the same. We just focus on the task at hand, selling parts and keeping the accounts straight. It’s honest work, and we’ve been doing it a long time.
