If you ever find yourself on Ellis Road near Anna Salai, you’ve probably walked right past Gold Sign. We are at No. 15/36 on Tippu Street. It’s a narrow street and things can get pretty crowded with all the traffic coming off the main road. We spend our days making signs and doing print work for whoever needs it. The shop is usually full of the smell of ink and the sound of the machines running. It’s noisy and messy, but that’s how we like it because it means we’re busy. We’ve got bits of scrap material and half-finished projects scattered around the floor most of the time. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice suit. We’ve been doing this for a long time and we know our way around the equipment. Sometimes a machine breaks down or we run out of a certain color, and we just have to figure it out as we go. It’s a hands-on job and we are usually covered in some kind of dust or paint by the time we head home. Being near Anna Salai means we get all sorts of people stopping in with different requests. We just take it one job at a time and try to keep things moving so they come back next time they need something made. It is hard work but seeing a finished sign ready for the street is always a good feeling for us.
