Shalak Fabrique

If you know Anna Nagar East, you know how 6th Street can get. We are over at A-Block 31/1, not too far from the Krishna area. It’s a decent spot for a fabric business like ours. Shalak Fabrique has been sitting here for a while now, surrounded by other shops and houses. Most of our day is spent looking at rolls of cloth and making sure the colors match what people are asking for. The shop isn't very large, so we have to be careful where we step so we don't trip over the bundles. It’s usually me and one or two other guys handling the cutting and packing. The light in here isn't the best in the afternoons, but we manage. People stop by asking for directions to Krishna all the time because the landmark is so well known. It’s a lot of manual work, lifting heavy bolts of fabric and getting them ready for transport. The humidity in Chennai doesn't help much when you're moving heavy stuff around all day. We keep the doors open mostly to let some air in, even if the street noise comes in with it. It’s just a regular local business, nothing too crazy or special about it. We just do our work, chat with the neighbors, and try to get home before the traffic gets really bad. It gets pretty dusty inside with all the fibers flying around, but that is just part of the job here.
