Sangini Sarees

If you head down to Hathwa Market on the Chapra Main Road, you will find Sangini Sarees. We are right in the middle of all the action. The market is always crowded, especially during the wedding season, and our shop is no different. It’s not a big, air-conditioned showroom; it’s a traditional market shop with stacks of fabric reaching up to the ceiling. We spend our days unfolding and folding sarees for women who come in looking for something specific. My sisters and I run the place, and it gets pretty hectic when three or four families come in at once. We don't have a sales pitch or anything like that. We just show what we have and let the fabric speak for itself. Sometimes the lights flicker when the market's power grid gets overloaded, but we just keep going. It’s a lot of talk and haggling, which is just part of the local culture here. We know which colors are popular this year and which ones have been sitting on the shelf too long. The floor is usually covered in bits of thread by the end of the day. We take pride in knowing our stock well. It’s a tiring job, standing all day and lifting heavy bundles, but it’s what we do. People in Chapra know us as a reliable place to find something decent without all the fuss.
