Nampongagro Farmer Producer Company Limited is situated in the town of Nampong, way out in the Changlang district. Our office, if you want to call it that, is at Sinmeng Mossang’s place, E31. This is in the 792123 area of Arunachal Pradesh. We are right near the border areas, and life out here is pretty straightforward. We are a group of farmers who realized that working together is better than trying to do everything by ourselves. We grow our crops in the hills and then bring them down to see what we can get for them. Sinmeng keeps the records and makes sure we are following the rules, while most of the members are out in the fields. It is a tough landscape, very steep and the weather is always a gamble. We do not have fancy machinery or a lot of money. We just have our hands and the knowledge passed down from our parents. Nampong is a small community, so everyone knows everyone else’s business anyway. We started this producer company just to give ourselves a bit more stability. We do not make any big promises; we just try to get the work done. Some days are spent just talking about the harvest over tea at Sinmeng’s. It is not a corporate life, it is just how we survive and keep the farms running in this part of Changlang. We are just neighbors helping neighbors get by.
