Our office is tucked away in Bhagwati Niwas, over in the Chakkar area of Shimla. It’s a quiet spot compared to the busy markets, and the air up here is always a bit cooler. Working in construction in Himachal Pradesh isn't like working on the plains. You have to deal with the slopes and the unpredictable mountain weather. We’ve been at this for quite a while now. We aren't a big, polished firm with shiny cars. Most of us wear heavy boots and warm jackets for most of the year. The work is physically demanding, especially when we have to move materials up narrow paths. We don't have any grand slogans. We just try to make sure every beam and brick is where it should be. Our day starts early, often before the mist has cleared from the valleys. We spend a lot of time talking to local suppliers and making sure the trucks can make it up the winding roads. It is a slow process sometimes, but you can't rush things in the hills. The office is small and filled with the smell of old paper and coffee. We like being in Chakkar because it feels like a real neighborhood. We are just a group of people trying to build things that will survive the heavy snow and the monsoon rains. It’s honest, hard work and we wouldn't have it any other way. We just keep our heads down and get it done.
