About Urdu Books – Books & Knowledge in Chandigarh
If you walk down Murti Wali Gali on Old Nac Road, you’ll find us at Shop 1216/1. It’s a narrow lane and can get quite crowded with people and carts moving back and forth. Our shop is full of books from the floor to the ceiling. We focus on Urdu literature, poetry, and some religious texts too. It’s quiet inside compared to the street outside. The smell of old paper is everywhere. We spend a lot of time dusting the shelves because the street dust always finds its way into the shop. People come here looking for specific poets or maybe a book they remember from when they were young. We don’t have a computer system to find everything; we mostly just know where things are by memory. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to dig out a copy from the back of the shelf. We have some regulars who come in just to talk about what they are reading. We sit on the small stools and have some tea together. It’s not a fast-paced business. We keep the shop open until late evening because that’s when people have time to browse after work. We don't have fancy displays or lights. The books speak for themselves. If someone wants something we don’t have, we try to note it down and see if we can get it from a distributor later on. It’s just a small place for people who still like holding a real book in their hands.
