Down on Satish Mukherjee Road, our office serves as a main point for the Hooghly district operations of Itd Cementation India Ltd. It’s a two-story building at number 336 and we have been here for a good while. The surrounding area is a mix of houses and small shops, so it feels very integrated into the community. We have some outdoor space where we park a couple of the company vehicles. Inside, it’s a bit of a labyrinth with small rooms and narrow corridors. We keep a lot of records here in big metal cabinets that have started to rust a little at the bottom. The staff here is mostly local, so we speak a mix of Bengali and English throughout the day. It’s a practical environment. We don’t have air conditioning in every room, so the fans are always spinning during the summer months. There is always a pot of tea on the go somewhere in the back. We handle the local logistics and keep track of the labor schedules for the various sites around the district. It’s a no-nonsense type of place. We aren't trying to impress anyone with the decor; we just need a solid roof over our heads and enough desk space to spread out our maps and schedules. The pace is steady, and we’ve gotten into a good rhythm with how we handle the daily paperwork and the site visits that happen every week.
