Our place is over in 143-B, Industrial Area Phase 1 in Chandigarh. It’s a pretty standard industrial neighborhood where everyone is making something or fixing something. You have the sound of lathes and grinding machines coming from the neighbors all day. Micron Instrument is tucked in there, and we mostly deal with precision tools and various measuring things. The air inside the shop always smells a bit like cutting oil and cold metal. We don’t have a big fancy reception area. You just walk in and you’ll see some of us at the benches or looking over some technical drawings. It’s quiet work in a way, because you have to be careful with the measurements. If you’re off by a tiny bit, the whole thing is ruined. We’ve been in Phase 1 for years, and we’ve seen the shops around us change hands many times. The building is solid, concrete and bricks, nothing fancy but it stays cool enough in the summer. We have our lunch together in the small break area, usually talking about some part that’s giving us trouble or just about the traffic on the way in. It’s a practical life, making things that go into other machines. We don't really do the whole marketing speech thing; we just make sure the instruments are calibrated and ready for whoever needs them. The work is steady and that is how we like it here.
