The workshop is situated in Motia Khan, specifically at 7561/3 on Street No 4, Waheguru Road. It is a very busy part of New Amar Nagar and you can hear the sound of engines and tools from a block away. We deal with auto parts and industrial work, so it is a very heavy, loud environment. My hands are almost always covered in oil or dust by midday. The street outside is narrow and often blocked by delivery trucks, so getting in and out can be a bit of a challenge. We have a lot of heavy machinery inside that takes up most of the space. There is no air conditioning here, just the open door and the smell of hot metal. I spend my time checking the lathes or talking to the guys about the current batch of parts. It’s a tough job and the floor is never really clean, no matter how much we sweep. We have a small corner with a desk and a very old telephone where we take calls. Most of our work comes from word of mouth in the neighborhood. People know where Street No 4 is and they know we are here working. It’s not a glamorous business. We just put in the hours, deal with the heat, and make sure the parts are done right before we close the shutters for the night. It is just honest work in a grit-filled part of town.
