Working at I K International Publishing House is a busy affair. Our office is at 4435-36/7 on Ansari Road in Darya Ganj. If you know Delhi, you know how hectic this area gets with all the trucks and rickshaws delivering paper and books. We’ve been doing this publishing work for quite a while. It’s not all glamour like people think. Mostly, it’s just us sitting at desks covered in manuscripts and proofs. The walls are lined with samples of everything we’ve printed over the years. We spend a lot of time on the phone with printers or trying to coordinate deliveries. The office can get quite loud because of the street traffic outside. We don’t have a fancy reception area. If someone comes to see us, they usually just pull up a chair next to one of our desks. We drink a lot of chai throughout the day to keep going. Sometimes the power cuts out and we just have to wait it out. It’s a practical environment. We focus on the work at hand and getting the books out to the shops. My staff has been with me for a long time, so we have a rhythm. We don’t do big marketing campaigns. We just keep our heads down and handle the daily grind of publishing in this old, crowded neighborhood.
