Our business, Z H Kalmani, is based at Shop 2 in the APMC Market in Byadagi. If you’ve ever been to Byadagi, you know it’s all about the markets and the trade that happens there. We are right in the thick of it. Every morning starts very early, often before the sun is even up, as the loads start coming in. The whole area is filled with the smell of dried chilies and other produce. It’s a rough and tumble environment, not the kind of place for someone who likes things to be perfectly clean and quiet. We spend our days negotiating, checking the quality of the sacks, and making sure everything is loaded onto the right trucks. The office part of our shop is just a small corner with a few chairs and a lot of old files. There’s usually a lot of shouting and noise outside from the laborers and the drivers. It’s a busy life, and we are constantly on our feet. We’ve been operating out of the APMC for a long time, so we know most of the other traders around here. Our shop is simple, with concrete floors and high ceilings to keep the heat away. We don’t do any fancy branding or anything like that. We just focus on the movement of goods and keeping our records straight. It’s honest work that keeps us busy from dawn until dusk every single day. The market is where we belong and we enjoy the daily hustle.
