Down in Karanga Town, you can find us at Baba Spice. It is a small place, really, but you can usually smell the spices before you even see the sign. We spend most of our time sitting among big bags of different seeds and powders. The floor is usually covered in a fine dust from whatever we were grinding that morning. It’s a local spot, so we see the same faces every week coming in from the town. The shelves are a bit crooked and we’ve painted the walls a few times, but the humidity in Karanga Town always makes things look a little worn out. We don’t have a big staff, just a few of us making sure everything is weighed right and put into bags. The sunlight comes through the front door in the afternoon and hits all the different colors of the spices, which is about the only nice thing to look at in here. We have a heavy old scale that we’ve used forever. It’s not a high-tech operation, just a lot of manual work and getting our hands dirty with the goods. We open up early when the air is still cool and stay until the evening rush of people heading home. It is a quiet life for the most part, just sticking to what we know in our corner of the town. We don’t do much else other than keep the shop running for the people who live around Karanga.
