The New Convent School is right at the Main Chowk on the Main Road in Beerwah. If you live around here, you’ve probably walked past it a hundred times. It’s a busy spot with all the shops and people moving around all day. Our school is a bit old-fashioned, with wooden desks that have seen better days and walls that we try to keep painted every couple of years. The kids come from all over Budgam, some walking and some taking the local transport. In the mornings, it’s quite a scramble to get everyone into their lines for assembly. We don't have a lot of extra space, but we make use of every corner we have. The winters get really cold here, so we spend a lot of time figuring out how to keep the classrooms warm enough for the students to hold their pens. Most of us working here have been around for years, so we know the families in town quite well. It's not a corporate setup; it's just a local school where we teach the basics and try to get the children through their exams. Sometimes the bells don't work right, so we use a hand bell instead. It's a bit loud because of the Main Road traffic, but once the doors are closed, it’s just the usual sound of teachers talking and kids reciting their lessons.
