Habbu Halwai Ka Mashhoor Peda Private Limited has been around in Alapur for quite a while. We are based at House No 106 in Ward No 10, right near Al Hameed Hospital. The town of Alapur is a small place where everyone knows everyone’s business. We spend our mornings boiling down huge vats of milk until it gets thick and creamy. Making pedas is a slow process that you can't really rush if you want it to taste right. The shop is usually full of steam and the sound of big metal ladles scraping the bottom of the pans. My grandfather started this tradition, and we just keep it going the same way he did. We don't use any of those big automated machines. It’s all done by hand, from stirring the milk to shaping the little rounds of sweets. The street outside can get pretty noisy with the hospital traffic and the local market stalls. People come from different parts of Allapurpatti Nandu just to get a box for their families. Sometimes we run out before the day is even over because we only make a certain amount every batch. The walls of the shop have seen better days, but they are full of memories and the smell of cardamom. We keep the sugar bags stacked in the corner and the pods ready for grinding. It’s a sweet life, even if the work is hot and tiring.
