Over in Sunapanga, near Balliguda, we’ve got the Kandhamal Balliguda Farmer Producer Company Limited. Mamata Sahu is the one who helps keep everything running at our base. This area of Kandhamal is known for its hills and the things we grow here. We’re a collective of local farmers who wanted to have a bit more say in how our products are sold. It’s a simple setup. We don't have a big staff, just us farmers working together. Most days we are out in the fields, and we only head to the office in Sunapanga when there’s something important to sign or a meeting to attend. We grow a variety of things, and it changes with the seasons. It’s a lot of manual labor, but we’re used to it. We aren't interested in sounding like a big city business. We just speak plain English and talk about the things that matter, like the quality of the seeds and the cost of transport. Sometimes the roads around Balliguda make it hard to get things moving, but we manage. We’ve learned that by staying together as a company, we can handle the ups and downs of farming a bit better. It’s just a group of people from the same neighborhood trying to do right by their land and their families. No frills, just hard work.
