Sps Steel & Power Ltd., Jharsuguda, Orissa

We are based out of 20, Co-Operative Colony in Bokaro Steel City. Even though the name mentions Jharsuguda in Orissa, this office in Jharkhand is where a lot of the administrative stuff happens. Bokaro is a town built on steel, so we fit right in here. It’s a quiet enough street compared to the main plant areas. We spend our days coordinating between the different sites. It involves a lot of long-distance calls and tracking shipments on spreadsheets. The office is pretty basic. We have some old wooden desks and a few computers that have seen better days. It gets the job done though. We handle the paperwork for the steel and power side of things. It’s a lot of logistical work. People think steel is just about the big furnaces, but there is a mountain of forms and permits behind every ton of metal. We try to keep the errors to a minimum, but we’re only human. Sometimes things get delayed at the border or on the rails. We just deal with it as it comes. We aren't trying to be the biggest company out there. We just want to keep the operations running smooth. Most of us have lived in Bokaro for decades. We understand how the industry works and we just stick to our part of it. It’s a long day usually, but that’s fine.
