There are always pieces of fabric and thread everywhere you look. We have a few sewing machines going most of the day. The sound of the needles is just part of the background here. Women from the colony come in with their sarees and dress materials. We talk about the fits and the colors. It gets crowded on the weekends when everyone wants their clothes finished at once. We do our best to keep up. Sometimes we stay late under the tube lights to finish a pile of work. Matching the right colors is the trickiest part. We have shelves full of different colored threads and linings. The shop isn't very large, so we have to stay organized, or at least try to. My hands are usually stained with chalk from marking the patterns. We’ve seen the colony change over the years, but our shop stays pretty much the same. People know they can just drop in and see how their order is coming along. We don’t have a website or anything like that. Word of mouth is how people find us. It is an honest living and it keeps us busy from morning till night. We just focus on the work on the table.
