Our shop, Variety Store, is in the village of Rondia, under the Budbud police station area in the Burdwan district. It’s a local place for local people. We don’t have the big crowds of a city, but we stay busy enough with the folks from around here. The shop sits right in the heart of the village. We carry a bit of everything because that’s what people need around here. Some days the dust from the road gets inside, so we spend a lot of time cleaning the counters and the jars. It’s a simple building, nothing special about the architecture. We know almost everyone who walks through the door by name. We’ve lived here and worked here for a long time. Life moves a bit slower in Rondia. We open up early and stay until the sun goes down. It’s not a polished business with a big marketing plan. We just buy what we think will sell and put it on the shelves for our neighbors. Sometimes we run out of things and have to wait for the next delivery to come from the city, which can take a few days. It’s an honest way to make a living. We talk to the neighbors, hear the news, and keep the store going. It’s just us here, doing the best we can with what we have in the Burdwan district. We like being part of the community.
