Gandhi Rice Mill

We are located in Monai, Gorola, which is part of the Birbhum district. This rice mill has been our main work for many years now. The building is simple and sits among the fields where much of the rice is actually grown. We spend the day processing the grain, separating the husk, and getting it ready for the market. It’s a repetitive kind of work, but it keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down. The machinery makes a lot of noise, so we’ve gotten used to shouting over the roar of the grinders. In Birbhum, rice is everything, and we are just one small part of that cycle. We don't have a big corporate team; it’s just a few of us making sure the bags are filled and stitched up properly. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, especially when it rains and we have to keep everything dry. The yard is usually full of tractors and carts bringing in the raw paddy. We just take it as it comes. It's dusty work and involves a lot of manual labor, but that's just how a mill operates in this part of the country. We keep the machines oiled and the gate open for the local farmers who bring their harvest to us. It isn't a glamorous job, but it is what we know how to do best in this little corner of Gorola.
