You can find us in the village of Jambuni, which is out in the Bolpur area of Birbhum. Our setup is at Aradhana Chowdhury’s place. Bolpur is a nice place to work, though it gets quite quiet out here compared to the bigger cities. We deal with fly ash bricks, so our yard is usually piled high with grey blocks. It is a practical business. We don't spend much time on fancy talk; we just focus on making sure the bricks are pressed and dried properly. The road to the village can get a bit muddy during the monsoon, which makes it a challenge for the tractors and trucks to get in and out. Most of the people working here live nearby, so there is a bit of a community feel to the whole thing. We start early in the morning before the heat of the day really kicks in. Aradhana’s place provides a good base for us to keep the records and handle the visitors who come by looking for materials for their houses. The air is generally clear, except for when we are moving the ash around. We just keep to our routine, making sure the piles are tidy and the orders are ready for whoever needs them. It isn’t anything too complicated, just a small-town brick business trying to keep things moving steadily throughout the year. Sometimes things are slow, but that is just how the construction trade works in this part of Birbhum.
