The Leather Complex is a massive place, and we are tucked away in units 342 and 343. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but it’s where all the action is for our industry. The air around the complex always feels a bit heavy. Inside our units, the focus is on the technical side of things. We have drums and various pieces of equipment for treating the leather. The concrete floors are often damp, and there’s usually a bit of a mess from the dyes and chemicals we use. It’s not a place for someone in a suit. We wear boots and clothes that we don't mind getting a bit dirty. There’s a small office area, but most of the time we are out on the floor. It’s loud, and you have to shout sometimes to be heard over the machines. We’ve been in this complex for a long time now. We know the other unit owners and we often share news over a quick cup of tea near the gate. The sun beats down on the metal roofs in the summer, making it quite warm inside. We have some heavy-duty fans to keep the air moving. It’s hard work, and the days can be long, but there’s a sense of satisfaction in seeing the leather turn out right. We just do our thing without making a fuss about it. There is always something that needs fixing or cleaning.
