Ashapura Bricks

Our yard, Ashapura Bricks, is situated on Station Road in Nagor Village. We are part of the Bhuj Taluka in the Kachchh District, right near the Chhatthi Bari Ring Road. Living and working in Kachchh means dealing with the heat and the dust all year round. We make traditional bricks and it is a process that has not changed much over the years. We dig the soil, mix it, mold it, and then fire them up. It is a lot of waiting for things to dry and then a lot of heat when the kiln is going. My father did this before me and now I am running things with a few helpers. We do not have a big fancy office. Our "office" is usually just a chair under a tree or a small brick room at the edge of the property. We get a lot of people coming in from Nagor and the surrounding villages looking for materials for their houses. We do not do any big advertising. Word of mouth is how we get most of our work. If a batch comes out well, people talk. If we have a bad run, we have to deal with that too. It is not an easy way to make money, but it is what we know. The Ring Road makes it easy for trucks to come and go, which is a big help. We just take it one day at a time and try to keep the stacks full.
