It’s a bit of a trek to get out to Sisupal Chhak if you’re coming from the main city area. Our place at Sisupal Garh is right near the old ruins, so there’s always that sense of history around us. Konark Kala isn't a big factory or a shiny shop. It's more of a workspace where we get things done. Most mornings start with clearing the dust off the tables. We work with a lot of local stone and wood carvers. Sometimes they bring their kids along because there’s nowhere else for them to go during the day. It gets pretty loud when the hammers are going. The post office is just down the road, so we're back and forth there quite a bit to check on things. The roads get really muddy when it rains, making it tough for the tempos to get in and out. We’ve been at this address for a while, and the neighbors all know us. We don’t really have a big sign out front. Most people just ask the tea seller at the corner where the kala people are. We spend a lot of time just talking to the artisans about their designs. There’s always a pile of scrap material in the back that we keep meaning to clear out. It’s a simple setup. We don’t try to be anything we aren't. We just make our things and hope they get to where they’re going in one piece.
