We spend most of our days out here at the Gandhamardan Iron Mines in Keonjhar. S.K. Mohanty is the assistant manager for mining and handles a lot of the day-to-day stuff on the ground. It’s dusty and loud most of the time, which is just part of the job when you’re dealing with iron ore in Suakathi. People in this part of Orissa know how it is. We don’t have fancy offices with glass walls. It’s more about checking the equipment and making sure the shifts are covered. Sometimes the weather makes things difficult, especially when the rains hit the hills, but the work doesn't stop. Most of us have been around here for a while and we just get on with things. The town isn’t huge, so everyone kind of knows what’s going on at the mines. We aren't trying to be something we aren't. It’s hard work and it gets messy, but it’s what keeps the place running. Being part of the Orissa Mining Corporation means there's always something to do, whether it's paperwork in the small office or being out by the pits. We’ve seen the landscape change over the years. You get used to the smell of earth and the sound of heavy trucks moving in and out all day long. It's just a regular mining life here in the Keonjhar district for us.
