Basu General Store

Basu General Store is also right there near the Axis Bank in the 462011 area of Bhopal. It’s a good neighborhood to be in, and we’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. The shop itself is just a regular room filled with all the stuff people need for their houses. We keep the milk in the cooler near the front because that’s what most people are looking for first thing in the morning. Then there are the pulses, the spices, and all the little things like matches and soap. We don’t have a lot of space, so we have to be clever about how we stack things up. Sometimes a box might be a bit out of place, but that’s just how it is in a busy store. The street outside can get quite loud with all the traffic heading towards the main part of the city. We get to know the people who live in the flats around here quite well. They come in to chat about the weather or the news while we bag up their groceries. It’s not a corporate business with a fancy office, it’s just us behind the counter. We take pride in being there when someone runs out of salt in the middle of cooking. It’s a small role to play, but it’s an important one for the people who live on this side of Bhopal. We try to keep a good variety of snacks too, because the kids around here are always hungry after school.
