A G Kirana is over in Shahpura, part of Arera Colony in Bhopal. It’s a more residential neighborhood, so things are a bit quieter here than in the main market. The shop is on the ground floor of a building and we’ve tried to fit as much as we can inside. We carry lentils, spices, oils, and all those things people need for their daily cooking. I start the day by sweeping the front step and checking what ran out yesterday. Most of our customers are women from the colony who know exactly what brand of spices they want. If we don’t have it, they usually give me a hard time about it until the next delivery arrives. The shelves are mostly made of wood and we’ve painted them a few times over the years. We don't have any bright neon lights or big posters. It’s just a regular kirana store where the fan hums all day long. Sometimes kids come in with a few coins for candy, and I have to help them pick something out. We know most of our customers by their names and which house they live in. It feels more like a community spot than just a business. We don’t try to do anything fancy, just keep the basics in stock and keep the place decent for the neighbors who visit us every day.
