If you go down to Naya Bazar, you’ll find Mattress India. It’s a crowded place, Naya Bazar. There are shops everywhere selling everything you can think of. Our shop is where we make and sell mattresses. You can smell the fresh cotton and the fabric when you walk in. It’s a very soft kind of business compared to the metal shops. We have stacks of foam and big rolls of cloth. Sometimes we are sewing by hand, and other times we use the old machines that hum along. People come in and sit on the mattresses to see if they like them. We don't mind. That’s what they’re there for. The shop gets a bit cramped because mattresses take up so much space. We have to lean them against the walls. It’s mostly just us and a couple of helpers. We’ve seen kids grow up in this market and now they come in to buy beds for their own homes. It makes you feel old but in a good way. We keep the doors open to let the air in, but it also lets in all the noise from the street. You hear the vendors shouting and the bells of the cycles. It’s just the way Naya Bazar is. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s home for us, among all the piles of cotton and fabric.
