Kings Cottage sits right on Bhimtal Road in the Khutani area of Nainital. It’s a place where we live and also let people stay when they are visiting the hills. It’s not like those big hotels in the city center with shiny floors and fancy lobbies. We have rooms that we try to keep tidy, and there is a whole lot of green around the building. Since we are in Khutani, it stays a bit quieter than the main mall road area, which some of our guests really seem to like. We spend a lot of our time fixing things around the house or tending to the small garden space in the front. When guests arrive, we show them where everything is and make sure there are enough heavy blankets because it gets quite chilly at night even in the summer. Sometimes we help with directions if someone gets lost looking for the lake or a specific restaurant. There’s a kitchen where we make tea and simple food if someone is hungry and doesn't want to go out. It’s a lot of work keeping up with a big house like this in the mountains. We deal with monkeys sometimes and the weather can be very unpredictable, which keeps us busy. Most days involve changing sheets, sweeping the floors, and waiting for the next car to pull up the driveway. We’ve been here for a good bit now and know all our neighbors well. It’s just a regular home that we share with travelers passing through.
