Traditional Phad Painting

We are over here at No. 55 Sanjay Colony. It’s right on Ummed Sagar Road. The sun hits the front of the shop pretty hard in the afternoons. Inside, it’s mostly just us working on the scrolls. Phad painting takes a lot of time and your back starts to ache after a few hours of sitting on the floor. We have brushes everywhere. Some are old and losing their hair but we keep them anyway. The paint pots sometimes spill and leave stains on the floorboards. It’s not a fancy studio or anything like that. Just a place where the work gets done. Sanjay Colony is usually quite loud with bikes passing by. You can hear the traffic from Ummed Sagar Road all day long. Sometimes we have tea brought in from the stall down the street. We’ve been in this same spot for a while now. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint but we are too busy with the actual art to bother with that. We just sit here and do the outlines and then fill in the colors. It is slow work. People stop by sometimes just to look, which is fine, though it gets a bit cramped when more than three people are standing inside. We keep the supplies in the back room where it’s a bit cooler. It’s just a normal day-to-day thing for us here.
